“I believe music has a unique power to enrich lives by building confidence, communication skills, emotional regulation, creativity, and connection. As a teacher, my mission is not only to grow musicians but to nurture humans, meeting each student exactly where they are and making music accessible, meaningful, and enjoyable for every kind of learner.”
Carolyn loves to teach the youngest of learners all the way up to supporting adults and seniors in discovering or reigniting their musical journey. Whether building confidence step by step, improvising boldly, or tackling big performance dreams, she strives to create a warm, safe space where students feel empowered, capable, and inspired.
Music has been woven into Carolyn’s life for as long as she can remember. She was singing before she was speaking, she picked up a violin at age four, and was learning piano by age five. Falling in love with the rich, resonant sound of the viola, she went on to study at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and later at the University of Victoria. Chamber music became her greatest joy, while also performing at weddings, private events, and busking as part of a fiddle duo at the Inner Harbour.
Carolyn began teaching violin, viola, beginner piano, and voice in 2012 and quickly discovered how much she loved helping people of all ages find joy and confidence through music. She has taught private lessons, small groups and in large classroom settings, drawing on a wide range of styles and approaches, including Suzuki, RCM, fiddle, musical theatre, pop, and one of her personal favourites: improvisation.
While raising her two young children, Carolyn stepped away from music teaching to work full-time as an Early Childhood Educator and childcare manager. This season strengthened her passion for working with young children and gave her extensive experience supporting neurodivergent learners, which continues to shape the way she approaches teaching today.
When not teaching, you will find Carolyn with her children and mischievous kitten, exploring beaches around Victoria, singing every day, and finding creative ways to reheat the same cup of tea five times between lessons.
