“Music is a language that we all have our own way of speaking, playing, and understanding. As a teacher my main focus is to bring out each students individual voice on their instrument in a positive atmosphere.”
Ian welcomes students of all ages and experience levels to a supportive and engaging environment. A versatile bassist, music producer, and dedicated educator, Ian brings a wealth of professional performance experience and a passion for teaching into every lesson. In addition to bass instruction, Ian offers music production lessons and theory for producers, helping them understand how harmony, rhythm, and arrangement combine to shape a great track.
After studying in the Jazz Program at Vancouver Island University, Ian began teaching bass at Arbutus Music (Nanaimo) and Groove Studios in 2009, before joining the teaching team at South Island Studio in 2012.
Over the years, he has shared the stage and studio with artists including Stereoplane, Justin Hewitt, Vince Vaccaro, Pat Steward (Bryan Adams, The Odds), John Andrews (Tegan and Sara), The Impostors (Justin Hewitt), and The Broken Strings (featuring Adam and Antonia of Jets Overhead). His band Stereoplane was selected as the headline act for the Nanaimo VANOC Olympic Torch Relay during the 2010 Winter Olympics, and his performances with Bucko and Toad earned recurring appearances at Sunfest.
Whether you're a new musician, an aspiring live performer, an experienced pro wanting to refine, or a producer looking to deepen your musical foundation, Ian's lessons are detailed and tailored to meet your creative and technical goals.
