“Blues Grooves” Blues guitar workshop!

Oct 27, 2018 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Our first Blues Workshop session in the Fall Term. Paul Mowbray teaches this very informative monthly workshop where he breaks down classic blues songs from a variety of style within the genre.

This first one is about "grooves"...and there is a good number to check out, listen to, learn the subtleties of playing, and even hearing them frankly, because many do not, so, unfortunately, we get the overly general take on what the 'blues' is, as though it's a monolith of generic guitar licks from a beer commercial, or worse, a beat setting in a drum machine.

Not so much, music lovers! There are dynamics, breath, pulse, depth, downbeat, backbeat, ghosts, space. So much to observe and listen for, so much to try to embody when you play.

Join this workshop and go a little deeper into this music... you'll come out a better listener and musician for it.

RockShop Band Camp

Sep 12 - Dec 12, 2018

Our youth Band Camps get underway on Sept 12, with a couple of great Band opportunities.

The younger band, 3:30 - 4:30 PM weekly on WEDs, ages 10-12, is a fantastic experience for younger musicians wanting to enjoy the fun of playing in a band!

The second group is kids ages 13-16. 4:30-5:30 weekly. Older more experienced singers and players learning to really come together as a team. These are fun & lively musical workouts that allow room for a lot of student input and creativity. Cover songs old and new, and original material too. It's a dynamic program.

We do current and classic pop and rock songs, always geared to the level of the musicians in the group. Supervised by experienced teachers who are very aware of, and sensitive to each student's needs in the group. The kids have a say in what they play as well and we practice to become better listeners, players, and performers.

The Fall Term is 14 weeks, Sept 12 - Dec 12

Blues Guitar Study Group

May 26, 2018 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Our monthly Blues Guitar Study and Jam hosted by Paul Mowbray.

I’m adding to our Blues Study Repertoire book: BB King's Sweet Little Angel, Why I Sing the Blues, The Thrill is Gone, and BB’s version of Stormy Monday.

Next Session:

The way I look at it we build two main skills.  The first is the ability to play individual songs well and jam them out. The second skill is what I’m thinking of focusing on next session:  the ability to master turnarounds, fills, solos, and comps in each of the major keys.  This skill enables the player to sit in on any jam and to do a song in any key competently.

That’s the focus of the next session.  Mastering the main blues keys:  E, A, G, D and C.

I’ll bring some new songs and we can also play off our repertoire book.  Please suggest songs as well.

Carl Perkins' Rock-A-Billy Guitar Workshop: Part 2 of 2

Nov 26, 2016 from 4:00pm - 5:30pm

Blue Suede Shoes to the Beatles, Carl Perkins guitar playing influenced a lot of musicians and set audiences on the edge of their seats with his intense and lively style of guitar and singing.

As one of the greats to get his recording start at SUN Records in Memphis, his writing and playing carved a path for the next wave of musicians, namely the Beatles. They were heavily influenced by Carl's music and George Harrison's guitar playing drew heavily on the sound and phrases he learned by copying him.

Paul Mowbray has been studying the rockabilly style and has done the analysis to break it down and explain it to us in a tangible way.

Lonny Koch assists these sessions.

Two Saturday afternoons, Nov 19 and 26, 4:00 - 5:30  PM

Small group class, held at South Island Studio in Victoria.

Email or call to register, and get your Rock-A-Billy shoes laced up just right.

Electric Blues Guitar Study

Nov 19, 2016 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Eric Clapton. Ah, Eric the Great. Clapton is God. What more can you say, other than it's time to re-examine the most influential modern blues/rock guitarist.

Sonically accessible, flashy, toneful, and still going despite years of playing, nerve damage, and pain.

We're (Paul's done all the heavy lifting) looking at his approach to playing the changes, adding excitement and intensity, getting up in the highest reaches of the fretboard, and knowing where you're going when playing his songs.

And his SPEED. Man he can play fast. We're gonna slow things down, then try to work up to it. You'll have some for a lifetime!

Paul Mowbray & Lonny Koch host, instruct, and humble ourselves to the fact that we'll never be as good as even an arthritic Clapton, but it's a lot of FUN trying!

Join us for a look at old Slow Hand's mastery of the blues form.

Electric Blues Guitar Study

Oct 22, 2016 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

Paul shares a deeper look into the specifics of BB King's clear and distinctive soloing approach.

Known as one of the best for his ability to "sing" through the playing of his guitar, ( not to mention his actual singing!) Paul breaks down the way he navigates chord changes with space / time and rhythm, and melodic phrasing.

Most of us blues lovers have heard BB and his band enough to know it's a beautiful style, but when we try to play along, it's just about impossible to anticipate what he's going to do. His phrasing is always surprising. His tone ringing open and clear. His timing deliberate and somewhat unusual.

Expect to learn about these aspects of his guitar playing and come out sounding like you know something about his magic touch.

The group session is small, friendly, and FUN!

Chuck Berry's Guitar Style & Influence

Apr 2-9, 2016

Chuck Berry, the guitar icon of Rock & Roll and songwriting influencer of all the greats that followed and were inspirded by his sound. Think Springsteen, AC DC, The Beatles, Rolling Stones ( they covered 13 of his songs!) So many amazing songs: Maybelline, Johnny B. Goode, Never Can Tell (C'est la vie), Rock and Roll Music, Nadine, Memphis Tennessee, Roll Over Beethoven...that's only the tip of the iceberg!

He was a clever songwriter and master showman, through music he broke racial barriers on radio and in live performance, is fiecely independant and sometimes cantankerous. He's nearly 90 and is still rocking!

Check out his website.    like I said - - he's Bad A$$ !!

Paul Mowbray and I are going to break down some of his iconic riffs, his rhythm playing and soloing style. There will be lots of hands on playing examples during class time and Tabs for you to take home to review for future study.

Two Saturday afternoons, 4:00 - 5:30 pm.

Location: Davie St Studio

Small class size - a quick email to join.

It's gonna be fun!

Soloists encouraged as well.

Jimi Hendrix: Rhythm Guitarist

Jul 18-25, 2015

Hey guitar players,

Want to learn some new pathways around the fretboard, hear inspiring new sounds and be surprised by your fingers?

Paul Mowbray and I are offering a sweet little workshop on the rhythm guitar style of Jimi Hendrix. a la Little Wing, Wind Cries Mary, & Angel.

His ‘embellished chord’ rhythm style, which has been mostly credited to the influence of Curtis Mayfield and the R&B bands Jimi played with from ‘62 – 66, has been imitated by many rock, blues, pop, and country guitarists ever after. The technique offers beautiful textures you can add to a soulful ballad, a loping country tune, or a R&B classic.

Players and bands as diverse as Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Matthews, and Lynard Skynard have used this style to give a special touch to their songs. (The list is much longer once you learn these phrases, you’ll notice them all over the place in so many songs.)    Angel    Little Wing

Extend your skills and freshen up what you hear coming from your guitar in this hands-on, guitar players workshop .

Two Saturdays: July 18 and 25

1:30 – 3:00

Price: 65.00

1905 Davie St Studio

Max 5 players (best on electric guitar)

Bob Dylan Acoustic Guitar Workshop

Apr 11-2, 2015 at 4:00pm

Learn the best accompaniment versions for some favourite Dylan tunes and also increase your acoustic guitar accompaniment skills by studying Dylan’s playing.

Is Dylan a great acoustic player?  Check out “Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”, “Blood on the Tracks” and “Good As I Been to You”.  He mastered alternate bass fingerstyle, (Travis) folk style, Ma Carter style, and has great chord voicings and embellishments.  Not to mention his great use of open D tuning.  “Don’t Think Twice”, “Buckets of Tears”, “Frankie and Albert” all exhibit great acoustic playing.

We welcome your Dylan song requests during this 4 week workshop as well.
