Markus Masaites - Piano

“Playing Music is an endless fountain of joy, learning and connections. I'm deeply grateful and excited to help students down their unique musical adventure paths. I see myself not as a dictator of knowledge, but as a mediator in students' growth and explorations. I believe very strongly that if I can nurture the artistic growth of my students, they will grow into more intelligent, caring and joyful human beings. I look forward to meeting you!”

Marcus Masaites – Piano Instructor at South Island Studio

Markus feels very privileged and passionate to be a Music Teacher. As a certified teacher in BC schools, he believes the best learning happens when students are having fun. To that end, he co-creates curriculum with each student by following their curiosities. Classical music is where he has the most formal training, however he prefers to teach through many different genres of music. He’s especially keen to introduce students to other musicians to collaborate and jam with.

Markus has been playing classical piano since he was 6 yrs old, completed his ARCT when he was 18 and graduated from UBC with a degree in Piano Performance in 2021. He was awarded 1st place at the BC Registered Music Teachers' Association Provincials, and received the Gold Medal for the Highest ARCT exam mark in Canada for the year 2016.

While at UBC, Markus co-founded the Genesis Trio which traveled to El Paso Texas to present interactive performances for thousands of youth. In New York, they took part in Ensemble Connect's Audience Engagement Intensive program at Carnegie Hall.

In recent years, Markus has been exploring song-writing, singing, dancing and jamming with other artists. When he’s not involved in Music-Making and teaching, he enjoys spending time outdoors with a pair of skis or a paddleboard.
