Originally
from Calgary, Mike has been playing guitar since he was fifteen. He enjoys a
variety of musical styles, and is influenced by everything from hardcore to
classical. Specifically, he likes experimenting with effects and unorthodox
techniques: "I love the guitar because it's such a boundless instrument.
There is absolutely no limit to its creative potential."
When teaching, Mike supplies a positive demeanor and strong
knowledge of musical theory. He emphasizes songwriting,
improvisation, and above all, fun for his students! They are
always encouraged to bring in music they enjoy: "While theory is
undeniably important, I promote a hands-on approach, incorporating
songs the student can relate to". In the past, this has involved
transcriptions of everything from Weird Al to Jay- Z. Mike teaches
both electric and acoustic, and is open to all ages and abilities.
Here on the Island, Mike currently writes, performs, and records with his band Hollydene.
